Good stuff this week -
Watching
Upload on Amazon Prime Video. This weird, funny show is a mix between The Good Place, Black Mirror, and Jane the Virgin. I am kind of sensitive when it comes to scary/dark shows, so I wasn’t sure if I would like this after watching the first episode, but it got much warmer/funnier in later episodes.
Listening
Gaslighter, by The Chicks. I’ve loved The Chicks for a long time, and I’ve been really fascinated to watch their political beliefs transform over the years as I found them echoing some of my own personal transformations. I love how this album contains more their beautiful harmonies while still retaining that sharp edge.
Hello Relationships with Christine Koh and John Baxter. A new podcast from half of the creative team behind one of my long-time fav podcasts, Edit Your Life (Christine) and her husband John. John is a psychologist and they take a really practical approach to common relationship issues.
Reading
Joy at Work by Marie Kondo and Scott Sonenshein. I’ve followed Kondo for a while, including doing a pretty intense decluttering of our house and basking in the zen of her Netflix series in January. (Was that really just 7 months ago?) This was more of skim-read for me, but I’ve been in a bit of a funk about work lately so sorting through all my paper files was a nice change of pace. I am (for now) going into the office so I like the idea of making my work environment a place I really enjoy.
Doing
Gardening. Basically everything I planted this spring has shriveled up, been trampled by my dog, or been eaten by pests. However, the pumpkin I threw in my garden to compost after Halloween last year is going gangbusters. Perhaps my garden this year is a pumpkin patch!
Chickens. We got 6 baby chicks in the early days of quarantine and it’s been quite the quar-project. We built a coop (aka the chicken palace), rehomed a rooster that we couldn’t keep in the city limits, and this week, we had our first tragedy strike. Our last remaining Easter Egger flew out of the fence enclosure and our dog quickly and efficiently broke its neck. 😰 So this morning Old Farmer McYouTube taught us how to clip chicken feathers and we did that for the 4 remaining chickens in our flock. Hopefully we will get our first eggs soon!
Swimming/pool time. Here in Southwest Missouri our pools were able to open at the beginning of the summer with limited capacity. Going to the pool with my family has been one of the most normal feeling things we have been able to do this summer. Thank goodness for chlorine and UV rays!
